The HighScope Approach to Early Childhood Education

At Encompass, we are proud to implement the HighScope Curriculum, a holistic educational approach that supports children’s growth across all developmental areas. HighScope is designed to foster a love of learning and empower children to become active participants in their own education.

How HighScope Works

The HighScope Curriculum emphasizes active learning, where children learn best by interacting with their environment and engaging with hands-on activities. Children are given opportunities to explore, experiment, and solve problems, with educators offering support and guidance as needed.

A core feature of the HighScope approach is the “Plan-Do-Review” sequence. This structured routine encourages children to plan their activities, carry them out, and then reflect on the results. This reflective process helps children make connections between their actions and the outcomes, fostering deeper learning and understanding. Research has shown that this routine is strongly linked to positive developmental outcomes, helping children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

A Structured Yet Flexible Environment

HighScope’s daily schedule is predictable and consistent, which allows children to gain a sense of security and autonomy. Within this structure, children have the freedom to make choices, direct their own learning, and interact with peers and teachers.
