HighScope

At Encompass, we are proud to implement the HighScope Curriculum, a holistic educational approach that supports children’s growth across all developmental areas. HighScope is designed to foster a love of learning and empower children to become active participants in their own education.

  • Key Goals of HighScope:
  • How HighScope Works
  • A Structured Yet Flexible Environment
  • Aligning with Best Practices in Early Education

Key Goals of HighScope:

Through the HighScope approach, children are encouraged to:

  • Engage Actively with people, materials, events, and ideas to enhance their learning experience.
  • Develop Independence, Responsibility, and Confidence, both in school and in life.
  • Plan, Execute, and Reflect on their activities, promoting critical thinking and self-reflection.
  • Acquire Essential Skills in academic, social, and physical domains, laying the foundation for lifelong learning

How HighScope Works

The HighScope Curriculum emphasizes active learning, where children learn best by interacting with their environment and engaging with hands-on activities. Children are given opportunities to explore, experiment, and solve problems, with educators offering support and guidance as needed.

A core feature of the HighScope approach is the “Plan-Do-Review” sequence. This structured routine encourages children to plan their activities, carry them out, and then reflect on the results. This reflective process helps children make connections between their actions and the outcomes, fostering deeper learning and understanding. Research has shown that this routine is strongly linked to positive developmental outcomes, helping children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

A Structured Yet Flexible Environment

HighScope’s daily schedule is predictable and consistent, which allows children to gain a sense of security and autonomy. Within this structure, children have the freedom to make choices, direct their own learning, and interact with peers and teachers. The combination of structure and flexibility is key to fostering self-direction and helping children build the confidence to explore and learn at their own pace.

Aligning with Best Practices in Early Education

The HighScope approach is aligned with leading recommendations for early childhood education, including those from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and Head Start Program Performance Standards. By using developmentally appropriate practices, HighScope ensures that children receive a well-rounded, enriching educational experience that supports their growth and development in all areas.

At Encompass, we are committed to creating an environment where every child can thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally—through active, engaging learning experiences grounded in the principles of the HighScope Curriculum.

Conscious Discipline

At Encompass, we believe that learning is an ongoing process, where new skills are developed through everyday experiences guided by supportive adults and more experienced peers. As experts in early education, we understand that every child brings unique strengths and challenges to the classroom. That’s why we utilize Conscious Discipline, an evidence-based, trauma-informed approach that supports the social-emotional development of each child in our care.

  • What is Conscious Discipline?
  • How We Use Conscious Discipline
  • Building Emotional Intelligence and Strong Relationships

What is Conscious Discipline?

Conscious Discipline is an approach that focuses on building emotional intelligence and social skills in children. It emphasizes the importance of understanding how adverse childhood experiences and trauma impact a child’s brain and behavior. By recognizing that challenging behaviors often stem from unmet needs or unlearned skills, our educators are able to better support children in managing their emotions and developing the skills necessary for success in the classroom and beyond.

How We Use Conscious Discipline

At Encompass, we see children’s behaviors not as problems, but as forms of communication. When a child “acts out” it may be an expression of an unmet need or a skill they haven’t yet developed. Our educators are trained to decode these behaviors, identify the underlying need, and create a plan to coach children through the learning process. By addressing the root causes of behaviors, we help children build new skills and better navigate their social and emotional worlds.

Building Emotional Intelligence and Strong Relationships

Through Conscious Discipline, we focus on three key areas of social-emotional development:

  • Identifying Emotions: Children are taught to recognize and label their emotions, which is the first step toward emotional regulation.
  • Emotional Regulation: Our educators guide children in learning strategies to manage their emotions, such as deep breathing, calming techniques, and self-soothing methods.
  • Relationship Building: We foster cooperation, empathy, and problem-solving, helping children build positive relationships with their peers and adults in the classroom.

By focusing on these foundational skills, we empower children to succeed academically and socially, building the emotional resilience they need to thrive in any environment.

At Encompass, we are committed to nurturing the whole child—mind, body, and heart—ensuring they are equipped with the emotional intelligence and social skills to succeed now and in the future.
