Just Breathe

Breathing plays a powerful role in brain function and emotional regulation. It directly influences the nervous system, shifting us from stress and survival mode to a state of calm and connection. When we practice mindful breathing, we allow ourselves a moment to pause, allowing us to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. Teaching children this important coping mechanism helps them gradually develop impulse control and self-regulation skills, supporting their Social Emotional Development.

How To Do It:

  • STAR Breathing – Smile, Take a deep breath, And Relax. Create a star shape with your body or give yourself a hug!
  • Balloon Breathing – Imagine slowly inflating and deflating a balloon with your breath.
  • Drain Breathing – Tense your hands, inhale deeply, and “drain” stress as you exhale.
  • Pretzel Breathing – Cross arms, link fingers, pull hands to chest, and breathe slowly to center yourself.

Why It Works:

  1. Balances the Nervous System
  • Shallow breathing triggers fight-or-flight, increasing anxiety.
  • Slow, deep breaths signal safety, calming the body.
  1. Regulates Stress Hormones
  • Lowers cortisol (stress hormone), reducing anxiety and frustration.
  • Releases endorphins, promoting relaxation and control.
  1. Activates the Prefrontal Cortex
  • Boosts oxygen flow to the brain, enhancing focus, impulse control, and decision-making.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Practice often. Regular breathing exercises train the mind and body to stay composed under stress.
  • Start when calm. Practicing in peaceful moments makes it easier to apply in stressful situations.
  • Make it fun! Use things your kids love to engage them. Do they love pizza? Pretend to smell the pepperoni, then cool it off by blowing on it!

By making mindful breathing a habit, we train the brain to pause, regulate emotions, and respond with intention—fostering a calmer, more connected dynamic with children.
